Winterfest in Mackinaw, Mich.
Snowbirds of all ages will be heading to Mackinaw City, Mich., Jan. 18 to 20 for the town's eighth-annual Winterfest. The three-day fete includes sleigh rides, an ice-fishing contest, fireworks, a snowshoe race and a bowling tournament using frozen chickens instead of balls. The weekend is capped by a snow-sculpting competition that you can help judge. Winterfest hours are 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 9 a.m. to noon Sunday. Contemporary Jewelry in Pittsburgh
Ever think of turning a set of antique keys into a bracelet? That's just one of the one-of-a-kind pieces of art in "Transformation 3: Contemporary Works in Jewelry and Small Metals" at the Society for Contemporary Craft in Pittsburgh. The exhibit, on display through March 23, comprises 49 works -- ranging from neckpieces to teapots -- by artists from around the country. Workshops on metals and jewelry will be held throughout the show. Holy Art of Imperial Russia in Columbus
The Pontifical College Josephinum seminary in Columbus is showcasing 84 hand-painted Russian icons spanning the late 17th to early 20th centuries. "Heaven on Earth: The Holy Art of Imperial Russia," on exhibit through Feb. 10, chronicles the history and artistry of these sacred wooden panels depicting Biblical scenes. Many of the artifacts, once fixtures in Russian Orthodox households, were produced by the renowned House of Fabergé. The college is located at 7625 N. "The Day the Earth Stood Still" in Chicago
Through Jan. 6, Chicago's Museum of Science and Industry celebrates galactic fun with an exhibit of more than 200 vintage space-themed toys and props from classic baby boomer films. Highlights include the flying saucer from "The Day the Earth Stood Still" (hard to believe it was only 81 inches in diameter) and 15 models of Robby the Robot, star of "Forbidden Planet" (one of them is worth $15,000).
