This year's event, which takes place Sept. 15 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sept. 16 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., includes a Civil War re-enactment, pottery-making demonstrations and pioneer music. Chow down on sliced apples smothered in caramel sauce or chicken corn chowder, both cooked over an open fire. For more information, log on to www.johnnyappleseedfest.com or call (219) 427-6003.
