Behind every efficiently run city is a team of dedicated employees whose work often happens behind the scenes. From balancing budgets and maintaining records to guiding development and answering residents’ questions, the team at Brunswick City Hall keeps the community running smoothly. Here’s a look at the faces behind the titles and a glimpse at what their roles entail.

Brunswick Mayor's Court

Mayor’s court provides residents with a fast, local way to handle minor offenses —mainly traffic violations, ordinance violations and low level misdemeanors.

Maria Fenos

Clerk of Court

What does your role involve? As a clerk of court, I am responsible for entering ticket information, managing records, filings, warrants, collecting fines/fees, court appearances and the flow of information that keeps the judicial system functioning smoothly. I compile monthly and annual reports, which include the distribution of funds from the mayor’s court, billing, banking, tickets, types of infractions, prisoners, etc.

What might residents be surprised to learn about your job? The role is very complex — I work closely with the mayor, litigants, attorneys and the general public.

Question you hear all the time: “What is going to happen when I get to court?” I let them know what to expect and reiterate that our court is not intimidating.

Favorite local spot in Brunswick: Panera Bread!

Go-to snack: The Crème Brulee latte or the Pomegranate Hibiscus tea from Panera.

Brunswick Finance Department

The Finance department is responsible for accounting for all the money received and distributed by the city in accordance with local, state and federal laws. They house the income tax office, bill and collect for the utility of refuse and stormwater, and handle all of the payroll, debt, investments and the budget for the city.

Todd Fischer

Finance Director

What does your role involve? I oversee the entire department and manage the city’s budget, financial plan and investments.

What might residents be surprised to learn about your job? I think people might be surprised to learn how essential their taxes are to supporting the services in our community — EMS, police, plowing and road repair.

Question you hear all the time: “Where do my tax dollars go?” (We do publish a graph on the website showing where tax dollars go.)

Favorite local Brunswick spot: The new trails at Brunswick Lake.

Lynnette Ozanich

Assistant Finance Director

What does your role involve? I oversee the daily operations of the finance department and income tax office. I work with the staff to record transactions in the proper accounting periods and to the proper accounts. I also close the books every month and do all of the bank reconciliations, plus assist with our annual financial report.

What might residents be surprised to learn about your job? Even though I work for the city, I know very little about new things that are going to come to the city until they’re publicly announced.

Question you hear all the time: “Why do I have to pay taxes?”

Favorite local spot in Brunswick: Plum Creek — my husband and I have spent a lot of time walking the new trails.

Go-to snack: Fresh strawberries and dip.

Kelly Musto

Chief Bookkeeper

What does your role involve? My main role is processing payroll biweekly, monitoring and processing pension reports and handling any type of deductions or benefits for the employees. I also oversee the other clerks in the department.

What might residents be surprised to learn about your job? I learn something new every day. We have six different unions within the city, and I pay approximately 200 to 250 employees each pay period. So, it’s not just a matter of approving time cards; it includes knowing all of the different union agreements, etc.

Question you hear all the time: “What is a stormwater fee?” And on the W-2s, “What does this number mean?”

Favorite local spot in Brunswick: Cool Beans, Donut Land and Cozumel

Go-to snack: Iced tea from local coffee places.

Molly Parsson

Finance Clerk

What does your role involve? I work at the main counter. So, when someone comes into the finance office, I’m the first person to greet them. I assist the finance and assistant finance director, and I handle accounts receivable. I talk to residents about their bills, post payments into our system and document any issues.

What might residents be surprised to learn about your job? It’s not the most glamorous job, but it’s really an essential job.

Question you hear all the time: “Is garbage going to be delayed this week?”

Favorite local Brunswick spot: Niko’s Gyros To Go — I get the Corned Beef Reuben Gyro!

Go-to snack: Hot chai tea from The Grounded Bean.

Brunswick Administrative Services/Human Resources

The Office of Administrative Services/Human Resources strives to be a trusted advisor to the city’s management team, employees and external contacts. Their mission is to be a meaningful contributor to the success of the city of Brunswick, offering exceptional customer service and creating a community of excellence.

Gia D’Amico

Administrative Services Manager

What does your role involve? It is a dual role of human resources and administrative services. Our office handles all HR duties, including recruiting, onboarding, benefits, employee issues, succession planning, union contract administration/negotiations, progressive discipline, termination, employee goodwill, etc.

On the administrative services side, our role is to maintain and handle all city contracts with vendors and contractors, insurance administration, public records requests, vehicle registrations and license plates for city vehicles, bid advertisements and assist with the council and mayor as needed.

What might residents be surprised to learn about your job? We are the “catch all.” We usually have an answer or a partial answer to every question we receive.

Question you hear all the time: “I don’t know if I have the right department?”

Favorite local spot in Brunswick: Love, love Donut Land!

Go-to snack: A vanilla or chocolate cream donut from Donut Land.

Laura Timura

Clerk of Council

What does your role involve? Maintaining all the official records of the council —transcribing the minutes of all the meetings, attesting to legislation and posting meeting agendas, minutes and legislation on the city’s website.

What might residents be surprised to learn about your job? I also assist the mayor with his ceremonial responsibilities, including creating proclamations and certificates of recognition for community members, performing wedding ceremonies, etc.

Question you hear all the time: “When are the meetings, and how can I have my voice heard in the meetings?” I remind them that our meetings are typically the second and fourth Mondays of the month at 7 p.m., and there are two portions of the meeting where they can participate.

Favorite local spot in Brunswick: I love to walk around Brunswick Lake and take advantage of our city’s beautiful trail system.

Go-to snack: Greek yogurt with blueberries.

Community and Economic Development

The Community and Economic Development department of Brunswick covers a number of areas — building, planning, zoning, community development and economic development — everything from property maintenance to building a new high school or a new restaurant in town.

Grant Aungst

Community and Economic Development Director

What does your role involve? I oversee the department and work directly with all the businesses in town to help them grow in a variety of ways. For example, when businesses want to communicate with the city or connect with someone else because they’re adding more jobs or a new building, I work with them directly to help put them in touch with the right folks internally in the city or externally with some other organization.

What might residents be surprised to learn about your job? My role is very encompassing, and it crosses all lines. But it’s all about helping the community — from discussions with a resident about a fence or a shed to helping the school district get a new high school.

Question you hear all the time: The running joke is: “When are we getting the Olive Garden?” When I first joined the city, everybody wanted an Olive Garden. But most of the time, it’s: “What’s coming next to the community?”

Favorite local spot in Brunswick: It’s hard to pick just one because I know so many of the business owners here. But I like the Cracked Egg, Panini’s, Wild Fusion and Branka’s. Market 42 is fantastic because you can pick from so many different things. We’re very fortunate to have so many great options to choose from here in Brunswick.

Go-to snack: Coffee — it’s a beautiful thing. I probably have four or five cups a day of straight black coffee.

Jennie Lods

Planning and Zoning Coordinator

What does your role involve? I serve as the secretary on the planning commission as well as the board of zoning appeals, guiding residents and businesses through the process every step of the way, which includes ensuring they complete paperwork and sending approval or disapproval letters. For the building department, I do essentially the same, but it involves helping contractors with registration, residents with permits, companies with signage, etc.

What might residents be surprised to learn about your job? I put in a full-time day, five days a week, but I’m also at meetings pretty late. So sometimes I’m working 12- to 13-hour days.

Question you hear all the time: “How many chickens can I have?”

Favorite local spot in Brunswick: I love dining out, so I can’t even pick one favorite because I go to so many different ones.

Go-to snack: Anything mocha — and I love making my own coffee right here in my office.

Paul Magovac

Service Department Director

What does your role involve? The service department oversees the infrastructure, maintenance and engineering for the city, including the stormwater and trash services for the residents. We review the roads to see which are in the most need of repair. I also handle the contracts for electric and gas for our city buildings.

What might residents be surprised to learn about your job? My job is more of a desk job than anything else. For example, if residents want streetlights, it’s my job to make sure there are petitions for them to sign and fill out.

Question you hear all the time: “When is my road going to be paved?” We have over 125 miles of road here in the city of Brunswick. Multiply that times two because it goes both ways, and we have 250 total miles that we maintain.

Favorite local spot in Brunswick: Mucho Buenos

Go-to snack: Pistachios. I always have a bag of them here in my office.
