Brunswick is moving forward with plans to build baseball fields as part of what will become its 24th park, giving local teams and families more space to play.

Development will take place across four properties north of Grafton Road, between North Carpenter Road and I-71. While part of the site was once intended for a fire station, plans changed when the station moved to Hadcock Road. With the recent purchase of 507 N. Carpenter Road, the city now has the land it needs to move ahead.

Construction is planned in two phases. The first will bring two state-of-the-art baseball fields, followed by restrooms, concession stands, parking and other amenities designed to make the space accessible for visitors. In the baseball off-season, the open green space may be used for soccer, lacrosse and other activities.

The $1.5 million project is expected to go out to bid after demolition of existing structures. A significant portion of the work could potentially finish by the end of the year.

For Parks and Recreation Director Taylor Petkovsek, the need is clear. Recent field closures within the Brunswick City School District have left fewer options for teams.

“It’s heartbreaking when you get calls from coaches and parents looking for open areas for their kids to play,” Petkovsek says. “I’m excited for the development of these green spaces. There’s nothing more rewarding than seeing the community enjoy them.”
