Cleveland Guardians star third baseman Jose Ramirez signed an extension that adds four more years to his current deal to keep him in Cleveland until 2032.

In announcing his deal, Ramirez said that he can call himself “a 50-50 — 50% dominican, 50% Clevelander.”

Ramirez has been with the Guardians since 2013. In 2022, he signed a seven-year, $141 million extension. This new deal not only adds four years but also adds and defers money.

With this new contract, the seven-time All-Star will make $175 million over the next seven seasons, with $70 million deferred. The deferred payments will start in 2036 and continue until 2045.

The Dolans may not be on the hook for the deferred payments, either. In 2028, Guardians minority owner David Blitzer has an option to acquire Paul Dolan’s majority ownership.

Ramirez, who has finished six times in the top five in MVP voting, will receive bonuses for winning ($500,000) or finishing in the top five again ($150,000 - $300,000). The contract also has a no-trade clause.

"When the contract is done and Jose's time here is complete,” Guardians president of baseball operations Chris Antonetti says. “He will have established himself as not only one of the best baseball players of our generation, but an icon in Cleveland sports history."

Overall, Ramirez has played 1,609 games for Cleveland. If he finishes his contract with the city, he most likely will lead the franchise in the following categories.

  • Hits: Currently at 1,668, he needs 380 to pass Nap Lajoie as the franchise leader.

  • Doubles: Ramirez is sitting at 398 doubles and needs 88 to surpass Tris Speaker.

  • Homers: Jim Thome leads the franchise at 337. Rameirez trails him by 52 home runs.
