Sputnik I, Cosmonaut

A song placed in the background at the right moment in the right television show can generate serious buzz. Akron native Joseph Arthur learned that earlier this oear when his song "Honey and the Moon" received mass exposure on the soundtrack of Fox's blazingly hot series The O.C." Likewise, Euclid's Sputnik was set to have its tune "Alienne" appear on a May episode of Fox's lesser-known teen drama, "Wonderfalls." When Fox pulled the plug on the show in April, however, Sputnik missed its chance. And that's a shame, because "I, Cosmonaut" is a poppy, acoustic-rock disc filled with tightly crafted songs that deserve to be heard by a wider audience. Standouts on the 11-song, 30-minute release include the dreamy "Alienne," a quirky yet compelling two-minute cover of Sonny Curtis' "Love Is All Around" and the warm, harmony-filled finale, "Leslie's Lonely Day."

Joe Rohan Walk Along

Joe Rohan somehow successfully walks the intersection of blues, rock and country without losing his musical identity along the way. Buoyed by his powerful voice, Rohan drips confidence in his material, delivering a range of styles that cuts through blues-washed country ("Walk Along"), heartland rock ("Desert Love") and harmony-driven acoustic folk ("Finally Comes Around"), whileüalways keeping his focus on the integrity of each song. The result is a 44-minute collection of superb music that explains much about Rohan's ability to pack rooms across the city and beyond. A drummer who backed up the likes of Mike Farley, Anne E. DeChant and Robin Stone for years, Rohan's excellent solo debut leaves us wondering what took him so long to step out on his own.
