The Zoo Story

The Zoo Story paved the way for playwright Edward Albee to become "The King of Off-Broadway" in the 1960s. And although the American theater received The Zoo Story coolly at first, it rivets audiences today.

Albee crafts an individual's internal dialogue by placing Peter, a conventional citizen, and Jerry, a societal dropout, in the same time and space. Jerry tells Peter a tale about a zoo where humans are caged, which draws Peter — and audience members — into an examination of their own dichotomies.

Two performances remain of this outdoor play, Aug. 17 and 18 at 7 p.m. at Eden, the home of Jeon Francis, 3256 W. 99th St. in Cleveland. Tickets are $5 for the Aug. 17 show and $10 for the Aug. 18 show. Reservations are required. The play is a Charenton Theater Co. production.
