Low glass bowls brimming with robust hydrangea blooms, sunny daisies or classic roses create an eye-catching centerpiece that accents a room without interrupting a table conversation.
Create a remarkable centerpiece by layering height, varying texture and color, securing the shape and assuring adequate water, says Shannon Appell, floral designer, at Mayfield Floral.
Add water first: Glass bowls and vases filled with water will keep flowers fresher for longer. If florists’ foam is used, be sure to add water to the foam daily. And, when cutting stems, be sure that they reach the bottom of the container. “Otherwise, the water level will eventually go down and flowers will not get water,” Appell says.
Layer height: “You always want the flowers at the top to be a little bit taller and the sides shorter,” Appell advises. Think of building a crown shape from the vase, whether you’re using a low glass bowl or tall vase.
Vary texture and color: For a clean modern look, fill in a bowl with just blooms — such as all hydrangea, arranged in a compact manner. Or, add greenery for textural interest or berries for accent. Appell’s favorites are ruscus, seeded eucalyptus and wispy bear grass. Skip the baby’s breath filler and opt for limonium wax flower or Monte Casino that looks like tiny daisies with yellow or lime-green centers and lavender, dark purple or white petals.
Secure the shape: Appell uses floral tape to create a grid on the vase rim. This keeps stems from slipping out of the
arrangement.
