It’s time to meet some local buds.
North Coast gardeners display their best blooms — from the beloved hybrid tea roses to newly popular miniature varieties and more — at the Cleveland Rose Society Show at the Cleveland Botanical Garden June 16 and 17.
“Roses grow in every state in the union. In Hawaii and Alaska and every place, you can grow a rose,” says Cal Schroeck, chair of the Cleveland Rose Society Show and a longtime rose grower. “Not all roses will grow well in Ohio, but a lot will.”
Judges evaluate the iconic flora based on 48 exhibition classes, selecting four winners in each division (regally called the queen, king, princess and duke categories) to advance to compete for overall honors.
The roses aren’t for sale, but if you stick around until the end of the show, you might still get a sweet souvenir.
“If the public wants to take a bouquet home, that’s fine with us,” Schroeck says.
