Best Floral Shop: Lowe’s Greenhouse, Floral & Gift Shop
One bride wanted to incorporate gorgeous blue hydrangeas from her mother’s garden into her wedding plans. Floral Manager Sharon Thompson, with Lowe’s Greenhouse, Floral & Gift Shop in Bainbridge Township, said “of course” and picked up the flowers herself.
“I had a lot of spiders in my car after that, but it saved the bride some money and it was important to her,” says Thompson, a floral designer for 30 years. “Also, an Indian bride wanted Jasmine strings for her wedding. The little flower buds are intricately tied together with a string. She also had dates, pomegranates and green beans in her arrangements — each has a special meaning in her culture.”
Lowe’s can create a wide variety of beautiful, fresh bouquets for weddings, funerals, proms, graduations, showers, anniversaries and other events. But you also don’t need a special celebration to order a bouquet just for yourself, Thompson says. She likes “bold, royal colors,” including deep yellow, orange and purple for late August’s prettiest arrangements. Her suggestions include sunflowers, lilies and carnations. Lilies give “form and texture,” while carnations are affordable, available in many colors and help fill in an arrangement that includes more expensive flowers, according to Thompson. Peonies, garden roses, ranunculus, dahlias and orchids are also popular bouquet flowers.
Lowe’s Greenhouse, Floral and Gift Shop can trace its roots to 1926, when the greenhouse was founded by Carlton Lowe. It is the oldest retail business in the community. Celebrating its 100th anniversary this year, the business boasts of 40,000-square feet of production space.
