Ask a few Clevelanders where Hingetown begins and ends, and you might get a few different answers. For the purposes of this guide, we're defining Hingetown as the pocket of Cleveland's larger Ohio City neighborhood centered around West 25th Street and Detroit Avenue, known for its mix of restaurants, bars, coffee shops, galleries and creative businesses.

Amba

Why we love it: Amba delivers one of the city’s most transportive dining rooms, where dark, cocoon-like walls and glowing lunar sconces create a moody hideaway that still hums with energy. The menu leans into bold, Indian-inspired flavors through a spread of shareable small plates designed to mix, match and layer. While chicken, lamb and venison make appearances, the majority of dishes are meatless, and so full-flavored that even meat lovers leave satisfied. “There’s something for everyone, but the idea is that everything works well to eat together,” says chef-owner Douglas Katz. Try this: If you’ve never had savory lentil donuts ($13), now’s your chance. These South Indian snacks are served with sweet and spicy serrano chili jam and cooling coconut chutney. Pair them with the Turkish fried eggs ($12) and warm spinach dip ($10), brightened with lemon and garam masala. 430 W. 28th St., Cleveland, 216-417-6718, ambacle.com

Bar

Why we love it: Tucked inside the reawakened Creative Hangars, this intimate spot brings a polished yet playful energy to Hingetown, offering a compact, design-forward space centered on fresh oysters, martinis and easygoing indulgence. It’s the kind of spot you stumble into while waiting for a table nearby, then end up lingering longer than expected. Try this: The lobster nachos ($19) layer crisp tortilla with tender lobster, corn guac, lemon and a sweet soy reduction. 1442 W 28th St., Cleveland, 216-400-6309, facebook.com/profile

Larder Delicatessen and Bakery

Why we love it: The past inspires this Hingetown deli in an 1800s-era firehouse. Glass cases display fresh meat, pickles and pastries, and an open kitchen offers new takes on sandwiches, salads and desserts. Co-owner and chef Jeremy Umansky’s biggest inspiration, though, is helping Clevelanders discover food that is truly local. Along with regional family recipes, Larder showcases the abundance of ingredients the Cleveland area has to offer. Try this: Dishes like the pastrami sandwich ($17) — a fan-favorite evidenced by the 200 pounds of brisket the deli shreds through weekly — and the matzo ball soup ($8.50) feature ingredients sourced from the West Side Market, Port Clinton, Medina County and more. 1455 W. 29th St., Cleveland, 216-912-8203, larderdb.com

Rosy

Why we love it: From the mind of chef Vinnie Cimino, Rosy leans into the elemental pull of live-fire cooking, where a constantly evolving, European-inspired menu takes shape around what’s fresh, local and in season. The intimate Hingetown space keeps the focus on connection, with shareable plates designed to be passed and layered across the table. “We want it to feel like a neighborhood backyard cookout, built around live fire,” proprietor Andrew Watts says. “It’s more intimate, but still upbeat, appreciative and grateful, and very much rooted in Cleveland.” Try this: There’s no set menu here, just a rotating lineup chalked above the open kitchen and updated as dishes sell out. The grilled fennel with anchovies ($12) is a standout, Croatian hand-rolled pljukanci appears throughout the week and the RosyGal Burger ($25) is a Monday-only must. 2912 Church Ave., Cleveland, 216-785-9345, rosy.restaurant

Jukebox

Why we love it: A neighborhood staple in Hingetown, this music-centric bar keeps things laid-back and lively with a curated jukebox, regular vinyl nights and a warm, come-as-you-are energy. The menu leans comfort-forward with house-made pierogi and creative bar fare, paired with a drink list that’s as inclusive as it is fun. It’s the kind of spot that makes any night out feel like a local tradition. Try this: The Hingetown Burger ($15) features a smashed Beyond Burger patty with special sauce, double American cheese, crisp lettuce and sauteed onion on a toasted Leavened bun, making it a satisfying vegetarian option. 1404 W. 29th St., Cleveland, 216-206-7699, jukeboxcle.com

Patron Saint Cafe + Bar

Why we love it: The warm ambiance and awe-inspiring architecture at this European all-day cafe and aperitivo bar is a stunner. With arched ceilings and European tiles paired with a menu of unique spritzes and cocktails, espressos and Italian-inspired cafe dishes, this newer addition to Hingetown stands out, making it the spot for a date with your laptop or a friend. Much of the menu's ingredients and produce are sourced fresh from local purveyors. Try this: Grab a seat at the window bar and enjoy the brothy beans and greens ($14), a savory mix of tender gigante beans, kale and chicken sausage, finished with Parmesan and served with focaccia, gluten-free available. 2915 Detroit Ave, Cleveland, patronsaintcle.com

Rising Star Coffee Roasters

Why we love it: Housed inside a repurposed firehouse in Hingetown, Rising Star blends specialty coffee with a laid-back, neighborhood feel that makes it just as good for lingering as it is for a quick caffeine fix. The roaster’s espresso-forward menu leans creative, offering both classic drinks and inventive seasonal options that highlight its craft-driven approach. Try this: Go for something bolder like the Cardamom Bomb ($5), made with espresso, cardamom spice and brown sugar. 1455 W. 29th St., Cleveland, 216-273-3573, risingstarcoffee.com

Saucy Brew Works

Why we love it: This Hingetown favorite pumps out award-winning craft brews and pizza. Don’t neglect the dog-friendly Vibe Garden patio space in the center of Hingetown. Try this: The Fungus Amongus ($15-$20) combines Boursin, goat cheese and pecorino Romano with herb-marinated mushrooms, spinach and caramelized onion for a rich, earthy bite. 2885 Detroit Ave., Cleveland 216-666-2568, saucybrewworks.com

The Roaming Biscuit

Why we love it: What started as a pop-up in 2019 found a permanent home in Hingetown four years later. Open for breakfast Friday through Sunday, owner Shawnda Moye keeps the menu focused on thick, buttery biscuits served simply with spreads or piled high into savory breakfast sandwiches. Try this: The brisket, egg and cheese ($10) piles brisket and egg onto a biscuit with your choice of pimento or Colby Jack cheese. The special isn't available every day, so grab it when you see it on the menu. 1418 West 29th St., Cleveland, 216-452-6035, theroamingbiscuit.com

Verbenna non alcoholic mocktail

Verbena Free Spirited

Why we love it: After Dry January prompted a lifestyle shift for Molly Cheraso and her husband, she crafted a vision that became Cleveland’s first cafe-by-day, dry-bar-by-night. At the trendy Hingetown store, guests can sample nearly everything on the shelves before taking bottles home, and each craft mocktail is served in elegant glassware to mirror the traditional cocktail experience. Meant to function as a community third place, the inviting shop is adorned with vibrant colors, abstract patterns and charming decor. Its concept aims to fill a gap in Cleveland’s nightlife scene by offering an evening gathering spot that isn’t centered around alcohol. Try this: The New Romantics ($13) is a delicate, yet complex cocktail shimmering with edible glitter and fresh floral notes. The drink packs personality with layers of pink peppercorn gin, peach peony tea, rose syrup and lemon juice for a balanced mix of soft sweetness, gentle spice and bright citrus. 1434 W. 29th St. Cleveland, 216-273-7170, verbenafreespirited.com
