Keys to Survival

by The Editors | Nov. 7, 2007 | 5:00 AM

The best laid plans of brides and grooms sometimes go awry. But a well-prepared bride can ensure these little mishaps become funny memories rather than wedding-photo-wrecking catastrophes.

Packy Boukis, owner of Only You Wedding Consulting, says it’s a great idea for brides to make an emergency survival kit before the big day. You can buy a premade one on the Internet, rely on your wedding planner (Boukis has an entire survival suitcase) or make your own. The most essential items in Boukis’ bag:

1. Sticky situations
“The most popular thing in my bag is double-sided tape, for a variety of things. Usually it’s for straps,” she says.

2. Spot check
A quick-acting stain remover is a great idea, like a detergent pen or club soda. Check the instructions for the fabric of your gown.

3. Sock it to ’em
Spare nylons for the ladies and dress socks for the men are essential.

4. Need it, got it
An assortment of OTC meds like aspirin and Tums, hand creams and any other personal items the bride might require.

5. Sew what?
“I have a needle-and-thread kit that is pre-threaded with black, white and the color of the bridesmaid gowns,” she says. Great for buttons, rips and tears, the kit should also contain safety pins.

Good Advice
When the big day rolls around, brides have a lot on their minds. Marsha Newman of Perfect Choice Wedding Planners in Aurora reminds of these three things brides often forget:
1. The night before, get a good night’s rest.
2. Have food available before the event, and make sure everyone — including you and your bridesmaids — eats.
3. Include the bride and groom in the final head count given to the caterer. “You’d be surprised how many couples forget this,” Newman says.
