I went to John Carroll. I stayed because I got a job. Very seldom does one get hired right out of college as an assistant coach for a college football team. I jumped on the opportunity.
I got a good education but continued on to get a doctoral degree in higher education. Don’t ask me what that means, because I have no idea.
I don’t know what the community would be like were it not for the university. It’s the city’s namesake. It might be a part of Shaker Heights or Cleveland Heights.
They advertise itas the city of beautiful homes, and by and large, people stay after the appearance of their property. Folks here really keep up their landscaping.
For such a small community, we have tremendous diversity, both racial and religious. There’s Gesu church, Jewish temples and Protestant churches here.
It’s got quite a professional population, mainly because there’s no industry out here.
You’ve got to understand: You have a lot of 18- to 21-year-olds that, from time to time, are going to get a little rowdy. If you don’t want that, don’t move into the neighborhood.
We’ve been here 24 years, and I’ve had only one empty beer keg left in the bushes in front of the house. And I suspect it was some of my baseball kids. But all I did was thank them for it, because I got 10 bucks when I took it back to the distributor.
Life is too short to get upset about stuff like that.
I always tell my Ethics and Sports class, “This class would be 10 times more effective if we held it in the downstairs of Pizzazz at Jake’s.”
