Think of it as your kitchen away from your kitchen, if not your home away from home. This intimate little cooking shop, in a mid-1800s building with exposed brick and wood walls, stocks all the gadgets and gear a great home cook needs.Catherine and Carl St. John bought the place, and the Western Reserve School of Cooking with which it shares a building, around 13 years ago.

“Anything we use in the classes, we try to carry here,” Carl says, noting there are a few exceptions such as a couple big-name cookware brands that have exclusive contracts with larger stores. That means you can learn to make pastry in a French Bistro-themed class, for instance, then buy a pie-crust crimper on your way out.

If you’re uncertain exactly what to get, be sure to ask. Catherine is a trained chef and Carl was in the restaurant business for years. “It’s me and my wife and maybe one other person, so you’re getting one-on-one attention,” Carl says, “if you want it, of course.”

An Item We Love: Be the host with the most style with a 24-inch-by-13-inch raw-edge, olive wood charcuterie board ($84).
