Nature’s Oasis owner Elliott Endsley had an epiphany: While recovering from a benign brain tumor, the engineer realized he wanted to make his lifelong dream of being an entrepreneur a reality. So, he wrote up the business plan for Nature’s Oasis and opened his health food convenience store and cafe in Lakewood in 2016.

Last year Endsley expanded to the Van Aken District, where the bright lights and brick walls of the Shaker Heights spot evokes California vibes and fit with his ethos of carrying locally made products. In addition to stocking healthy, all-natural groceries, there are more than 100 Ohio-based products (our faves include strawberry milk from Hartzler’s Family Dairy).

“The best thing is helping other companies grow and get off the ground with what they’re passionate about,” says Endsley. The cafe uses many of its locally sourced ingredients as part of the menu to create gluten-free or vegan dishes and prepared meals to-go. But even if you stock up on your own groceries, Endsley works hard to keep prices low. “We don’t think that healthy foods should be for the wealthy,” he says. “It should be for everyone.”

An Item We Love: Cleveland Ketchup Co.’s 14-ounce bottle of ghost pepper ketchup ($5.99) will leave your taste buds tingling.
