Spa Guide: Quintana's Barber & Dream Spa

This speakeasy in Cleveland Heights is a tall-glass of chill.

A secret bookcase reveals a whole other world inside this Cleveland Heights barbershop and spa — a dimly lit, vintage-style speak-easy. A place to sip whiskey or artisanal cocktails such as the classic Rob Roy or the original concoction He Tipped His Hat, Like This, this upstairs hideaway is a boozy way to end your stay at Quintana’s Barber & Dream Spa. “We have a little oasis kind of tucked away,” says co-owner Dawn Mongelluzzi Quintana. “It kind of goes with the whole allure of our place.” That charm resonates throughout the rest of the space, partially located in a restored 1920s colonial. A first-floor barbershop, filled with regulars who stop in for a fresh shave and trim, has jazz softly playing in the background. The building next door gives way to a more serene atmosphere where guests can choose from spa services such as a 50- or 80-minute Aveda Chakra Balancing massage ($80 and $120). Created to release built-up stress, it allows guests to pick one of seven essential oils that represents tension, harmony, wisdom and more. “We walk you through a sensory journey,” says Mongelluzzi Quintana, “and help you find your balance.”

Try this: If you have dry skin, enlarged pores and fine lines, try the Aveda Perfecting Plant Peel ($55-$95). A 30 percent glycolic peel, it won’t cause redness or irritation. Wintergreen salicylic acid exfoliates and resurfaces your skin, while a botanical emollient blend helps soothe and calm.
