John Telich
It was great to see veteran broadcaster John Telich at Game 5 of the American League Championship Series, which saw the Guardians facing off against the Yankees. The Euclid native was a fixture at WJW FOX 8 News for 42 years until his retirement in 2022. Known for his deep knowledge of Cleveland sports, Telich covered the Browns, Guardians, and Cavaliers, as well as Ohio State football, with passion, winning numerous Emmy Awards along the way for his outstanding work as a sports anchor and reporter. In his private life, Telich is a dedicated fitness advocate, often participating in ultra marathons. Since retiring from FOX 8, he has hosted a popular podcast, "Telich Talks," where he interviews athletes, coaches and other notable figures in Cleveland sports.
Wayne Dawson
Veteran broadcaster and KSU alumnus Wayne Dawson was voted “Best Male Anchor” in Cleveland Magazine’s 2024 “Best of Cleveland” list. It was a pleasure to meet him at the “Best of Cleveland” awards party. With over four decades of experience at WJW, Dawson can be seen every morning from 4 a.m. to 10 a.m. co-anchoring "Fox 8 News in the Morning," Cleveland's top-rated morning show. Dawson has earned 11 Emmy Awards for excellence in journalism throughout his career. Away from the studio, Dawson serves as an ordained minister at Grace Tabernacle Baptist Church in Lyndhurst. A cancer survivor, Dawson was recently treated for oral cancer and has since become a strong advocate for early detection and awareness.
Raw Dog Grooming
I stopped by Raw Dog Grooming at 1124 Chester Avenue in Downtown Cleveland and had the pleasure of meeting the owner, Darren Williams, and his adorable client Kai. Darren has been operating his dog-grooming salon for three years and shared stories about his experiences Downtown. With a smile, he admitted that Kai is one of his favorite customers. It’s easy to see why—the pup gave me the same endearing, slightly annoyed look as a toddler on picture day, making the moment even more memorable.
Red Walters Bar-B-Que
I met lifelong Clevelander and cook Walter Hall at Red Walters Bar-B-Que, at 8425 Cedar Avenue in Cleveland. Walter began his barbecue journey with the company in 1984 at a different location. It was great hearing about his long journey in the Cleveland BBQ scene and how local residents have always loved his food.
Arslanian Brothers Carpet, Rug & Upholstery Cleaning
Ted Arslanian is the 86-year-old founder of Arslanian Brothers Carpet, Rug & Upholstery Cleaning. Ted and his brothers, Hank and Armen, established the business in Cleveland in 1959. They offer a wide range of cleaning and repair services, as well as rug sales and storage. Although his brothers have since retired, Ted still arrives at 6 a.m. each day to open up the store and lead his family in ensuring that each customer receives superior customer service. Ted's dedication to the Cleveland community is evident through the company's longstanding presence and reputation, contributing to the local economy and providing trusted services to residents.
Shawnda Moye
Delicious biscuits and a strong community spirit are equally important to entrepreneur Shawnda Moye, whose passion for baking started in childhood. In 2019, Shawnda established the Roaming Biscuit as a pop-up business in Cleveland, offering a variety of sweet and savory biscuits that quickly gained a loyal following. In 2021, she opened the Bake Shop & Café at Tyler Village, expanding her menu to include freshly made pastries, coffee, and sandwiches. She opened a flagship location for the Roaming Biscuit in Ohio City in 2023, focusing on biscuit sandwiches. A strong believer in supporting and uplifting minority-owned businesses, Shawnda showcases other women-owned and Black-owned enterprises in her café.
