Since opening as a pop-up and online shop in 2021 and then expanding to a brick-and-mortar at Van Aken District in Shaker Heights in 2023, Adun Spice Co. has prided itself on offering high-quality, unique spices with careful attention to each product. Now, business owner Ramat Wiley is taking time to give herself that same level of attention by closing the brick-and-mortar shop and taking a pause to restructure.
Adun Spice Co. is closing its brick and mortar at Van Aken Market Hall on Dec. 21. The company is also halting online orders for the holidays from Dec. 18 to Jan. 2. Then, it will close again from Jan. 21 to mid-to-late March, as owner and chef Ramat Wiley prepares for and recovers from surgery.
“I want to take some time to honor myself and my body,” says Wiley. “I also want to take some time to restructure Adun Spice Co.”

Although shifts in the economy, such as shipping costs and rent prices were not the main reason for Adun Spice Co.’s closure, they were contributing factors. “Costs are definitely getting higher and higher, which does not allow a lot of people certain luxuries,” Wiley says.
Wiley noted a need for more space in order to grow and further develop the company. Wiley says that although her time at Van Aken has come to an end, she is thankful for the ability to grow and maintain her business in that space.
“I did a lot in that 200-square-foot area, and I’d like to do more comfortably,” she says.

Wiley let customers know about the next phase in her business's journey in a Facebook post.
“I look forward to replenished energy in this next year," she wrote. "I aim to share more things with you in the upcoming newsletters, from recipes to conversations around food, spice pairings, cooking demos/information, and classes. I need a moment to breathe, and the time is now.”
Although the future location of Adun Spice Co. has not yet been released, the company is planning to host updates on pop-up shops and other events during this break. Updates will be posted on Facebook. Some products will also be available at the Meijer opening in Fairfax, as well as some farmers markets throughout the city.
