I lived within a mile of the city’s borders for the past 23 years. One of my first jobs was at the CVS Pharmacy located at the corner of Brecksville and Chestnut roads. North of that intersection resides a fitness facility called the Training Club. There, personal trainer Chris Whitehead works with his clients. He calls us his “team of athletes.” That team includes Bruce and Karen, husband and wife, who are as dedicated as they come.
There’s James, full of “farm-boy strength” and his wife Rachel, giving him a run for his money as she juggles weights and their young son. Erica’s the one cursing — at least out loud. (We’re all thinking what she’s saying.) Keith is the quiet one — barely making a peep as he out-squats us. As for me: I never remember to count the reps but always remember to complain in between. That’s a glimpse into our fitness family. We see each other about three times a week, but I would gladly see them more if my schedule (and quads) would allow.
As a 16-year-old, driving to the corner of Brecksville and Chestnut meant obligation as I prepped to clock-in for a shift at the pharmacy. Now, as a 36-year-old, it means joyful anticipation as I sneak in a workout, but also some time with the finest folks I know, as part of a community that has always supported me.
