Todd's Enviroscapes Inc. set up an intimate patio space onits clients' lot, providing privacy without a feeling of claustrophobia.While others may have considered an existing fencean obstacle, Todd's integrated it as part of the plan. Pavers wereintroduced to provide access to the existing deck as well as to thelawn. Plantings established additional privacy, offering a naturalbarrier between the patio and drive. A weeping mulberry andupright junipers promote privacy between the areas.

A Rocky River couple approached The Weidner Group,hoping to use their backyard more efficiently while solvingseveral unusual problems. A growing family, with multiplevehicles, they wanted to stop the car shuffle by creating a singlespace and a patio. A cedar pergola structure adds interest. Enhancementsinclude a gas fire pit with lava rock and a bubblingrock that provides water sounds. A stone wall, acting as a bufferand focal point, offers privacy.

Rice's Nursery & Lamdscaping Inc. in North Canton transformeda residential citified corner lot in North Canton intoa more secluded, attractive space with a private backyard settingsuitable for entertaining. Before work began, the backyard spacewas not only unusable and unattractive, it was also uncomfortable.Rice's Nursery changed that by adding an outdoor room.Utilizing existing walls, Rice's created outdoor seating and offeredmore texture to what had looked like a flat brick wall. Columnscame next. These increased the sense of separation fromthe street and also introduced a welcoming, attractive entrywayto the backyard. A gate furthered the sense of separation whilereinforcing the feeling of a more private space. A copper trelliswith climbing hydrangea supplied additional texture and color,helping to soften the expanse of the wall.

Schill Landscaping and Lawn Care Inc.'s client wanted anoutdoor entertaining area. The lack of space and a propertybacking up against a golf course limited the options. Schill'ssolution was a multi-level patio. Camelot pavers on a concretebase were installed in two levels and enhanced with curbstonesteps. Cedar privacy panels went within the landscape bed. Amasonry fireplace, added to the lower level, provides a focalpoint for entertaining. Plantings offer seasonal color.

Land Creations Landscaping Inc. built a beautiful, butfunctional, outdoor living space comprised of four distinctareas. The primary area features an outdoor kitchen withgrill, sink, lighting and an arbor. The other areas include suchhighlights as a gas fire pit, a small dining area and a centralentertaining location. Lighting, a water feature and customlattice work add additional personality and flair.

A client's love of cooking inspired Rice's Nursery and LandscapingInc. of North Canton. With a recently finished additionin the rear of the house, the clients wanted an area specificallyfor outdoor entertaining. Rice's suggested a cooking areacomplete with pizza oven, smoker and grill station. French doorsleading from the house to the patio area replaced an existing picturewindow and provided a seamless transition from the interiorto the exterior. Rice's gave consideration to other entertainingneeds. Ample seating areas lend themselves to cocktail parties,dinner parties or simply an evening of intimate conversation. Apergola overtop a formal dining area, complete with ample spacefor lounging and conversation, was designed to conform with theGeorgian architecture of the home as well as to provide an extensionof the interior dining room. For cooler evenings, a fire pitwas installed. Comfortable lounge chairs as well as rustic stonebenches surrounded the area, creating the ideal space for relaxationand conversation. Wide steps were added to this upper levelarea.

Rice's Nursery & Landscaping Inc. of North Canton createdan appealing landscape for its client's new country Frenchhome. With the back of the home looking out onto an earthenbank, Rice's recognized the need for a pleasant functional space.Although budgetary restrictions were an issue, Rice's was determinedto create the type of landscape that matched the styleof the home. A sculpted, stone terraced area in the back of thehouse provided a functional space. A fire pit and seating wereintroduced for entertaining and cooking while plantings addedthe right touch of color. The use of natural stone also becamea signature element with this project. To give the residence anaged character, natural stone pavements went in, while naturalstone walls, a water feature and a grill island were also part of thedesign plan. Planting schemes are diverse. A kitchen herb gardenworks well with the French country home concept and design.Boxwood hedges add a special touch. Perennial masses with silveryblue foliage furthered the authenticity of the period lookand feel.

Yard Solutions, Inc. of Groveport transformed an existinglandscape into outdoor living spaces for its clients' olderhome. After demolishing and regrading, an aggregate foundationwas poured and a new drainage system installed. Masonrywalls frame a raised front patio. The walls not only provide anideal area for socializing but also help add a sense of privacy.Because of its beauty and timelessness, Bluestone was selectedfor the patios, walks and paths, connecting separate areas witha similar feel. Landscape plantings add color and texture, softeningthe harder elements of the design.
KGK Gardening & Design Corp.

KGK Gardening & Design Corp. of Hudson eliminated thesmall segregated patios and the small timber stairs surroundedby six-foot walls in its client's backyard to create acohesive, usable space perfect for entertaining. After openingup the area, KGK selected traditional-style columns anda white pergola, thereby creating the appearance of an extensionto the house. A curved sandstone staircase with integrated12-volt lighting directs focus to the lakefront setting. At thehomeowner's request, a custom wrought iron rail with copperwrappedposts became part of the traditional design.

Lifestyle Landscaping Inc. of Grafton created a total look forthis five-acre estate. The combination of strategically positionedplantings, custom light posts and fieldstone achieved theeffect. Plantings not only served to obscure views of the homefrom the driveway but also provided the opposite effect, drawingthe eye to the home once at the front court and to the garagefrom the front walkway. Color pockets of annuals graced semishadedareas. Fieldstone retains and stabilizes the hill behind thehouse while fitted stones provide access to the existing deck.
