Fasih Syed wanted to be positive that the meat he ate was slaughtered according to the standards of Islamic Law, so he started his own halal grocery store in February.
Now, CleaveLand Grocers & Grill — equal parts grocery store, butcher shop and kitchen — works with a certification agency that follows the highest standard of halal, requiring that Muslim butchers ceremoniously hand-slaughter each animal while reciting the name of God. As the city’s only Pakistani grocer for Angus beef, Boer goat and sustainably raised chicken, there are also smash burgers and sandwiches on-site.
Syed is also proud to serve a bevy of products including chocolate cream-filled Cocomo Biscuits. “They bring back childhood memories for the immigrants here,” says Syed. 13425 Snow Road, Brook Park, 440-299-8237, facebook.com/clegng
