Indoor rowing
Row, row, row your ... indoor stationary machine? At Ann Weixel's Ride + Workout, you bet. The Lakewood rowing, cycling and strength studio offers rowing workouts for all levels, from beginners just learning proper form to advanced classes ($8-$14). The high-intensity, but low impact-exercise works your legs, core, back and arms, improving posture and strength, says Weixel. But contrary to popular belief, the workout is mainly focused on the lower body, not the arms. "It's all about adding power in the stroke," she says. "It's like doing a power squat over and over again." Indoor rowing on one of her 21 machines is an efficient way to get in a good workout with no need to worry about dragging out a boat - not to mention frozen rivers once winter comes. But don't worry, Weixel takes eager students out twice a year to the Boathouse in the Flats to flex their rowing chops. 18524 Detroit Ave., Lakewood, 216-926-5182, rideandworkout.com
