You may not think of chomping into a pierogi to get your Mexican food fix, but you should. Perla Pierogies' co-owners Daniel and David Serban are taking their traditional Polish potato dumplings south of the border with a jalapeno-cheddar variety ($7.99). "They're one of my favorites," says Daniel. Sold by the dozen and ready for the frying pan, these zesty pierogies are a bold departure from the classic potato and cheese. "With most pierogies you add onion and sour cream," he explains. "These have so much flavor that you don't even need that. You can just eat them straight." Working out of their parents' bakery and retail store, Perla Homemade Delights in Parma, the brothers spend all day in the kitchen helping to churn out their popular pierogies. "It [takes] about 10 hours, and we do from 110 dozen to 220 dozen a day." 5380 State Road, Parma, 216-741-9222, perlahd.com
