With its manicured lawns, red-brick clock tower and colored awning storefronts, downtown Hudson doesn't exactly emanate the gritty Rust Belt chic look that fills many Cleveland restaurants, shops and apartments. But a closer look inside the 6,000-square-foot furniture showroom (Sub)urban Sit reveals the town is just as trendy as any big city. Owners Phillip and Sherrie Bearden meld midcentury modern items such as the reclaimed wood Tatiana Side Chair ($369) with industrial pieces including the steel Crank End Table ($429). "People's homes are representative of their personality," Sherrie says. "People went from stiffer matchy-matchy to a little more unpredictable." Inside the former Gap space, the duo also helps others thrive with their Local Legend series that spotlights Northeast Ohio photography, furniture and decor such as Hudson resident Sean Dunn's string art "Home" and "Ohio" signs ($120) and bimonthly maker workshops that help people take ownership of what they put in their homes. "Maybe people will get out of their comfort zone," Sherrie says. 98 N. Main St., Hudson, 330-342-4128, suburbansit.com
