James Orlando was bred to be a baker. While he comes from generations of the well-known Orlando Baking Co., he didn’t want to end up in the family business. So Orlando brewed up the idea of opening a small coffee bar. Named after a barista term for the perfect shot of espresso, Copper Moon is a coffee lover’s delight hidden inside the lobby of the Statler Arms apartments. Orlando is king of the custom drink and educates you in his process. For a vanilla bean macchiato ($3 for large), he steams and froths the milk, artfully folds it in with espresso and explains the seeds from fresh vanilla bean pods are the most flavorful part while he pops the particles into your drink. Those looking for a serious jolt can order a fresh fruit smoothie with a special “crack” supplement of taurine, vitamin B, ginseng and caffeine with power levels ranging from a tame 1 to a boppin’-off-the-walls 10. “Ten is the strongest,” Orlando says. “There’s maybe five people I know that can handle it.” 1127 Euclid Ave., Cleveland, 216-296-9281, facebook.com/thecoppermoon
