Your backyard is an extension of your living space. Wendy Berry, owner and president of W Design, understands that and encourages homeowners to not have everything be so “matchy match” when it comes to decorating an outdoor deck or patio area. “Not always going safe and putting all the pieces exactly the same makes for a much more eclectic, interesting, layered design,” she says.
Here Berry provides a few tips on transitioning your outdoor oasis from season to season.
Gather Round: “I love umbrellas because they give you a ceiling in an otherwise open space. Even if its nighttime and you don’t need an umbrella for shade or cover, it gives you that kind of coziness,” Berry admits. She recommends a neutral color, such as white or cream.
Instant Appeal: Mixing patterned and solid-colored pillows to place on sofas and in chairs is a great way to punch up the mood for any outdoor space. For an easy summer-to-fall switch, trade out summer-colored pillows for fall ones. Oranges will provide an escape from the greens, blues and pinks of summer.
Flower Power: Potted plants are an inexpensive way to breathe life into a space. “Using the pots helps fill in space and gives you layers of colors and textures, ” says Berry. Switch out the flowers to change with the seasons. 79 N. Main St., Chagrin Falls, 440-247-4474, wdesign.com
