Open, humorous and dynamic, James Mixson caters to his mostly female clientele at No Fat Birthdays by being a positive cheerleader. “You obviously can’t be the girl you were five years ago, but you can be a better woman five years from now,” says Mixon, who laments the social forces that make many women doubt themselves. “We can both be fun and effective, and that’s my take on fitness collectively. So it’s not everything we see on Instagram, which is kind of a glorified another world.”
His most popular group fitness class, RIPPED (resistance interval, plyometric power endurance training), is a party atmosphere that produces a major calorie burn.
“I want you to let go of whatever your reality is before you walk in the door here so you’re in your happy place,” he says. “Whatever is at home, whatever bills, whatever b.s. is behind you, leave it in the car. Just have a good time, and allow yourself to be present.”
