Q: How does a sense of community help create a successful learning environment?
A: “Developing a sense of community makes learning easier,” says Betsy Glor, science department chair and chemistry teacher at Lake Ridge Academy. “Students can feel safe to take risks, to ask questions and to really explore and expand their knowledge when they have a sense of community and sense of empathy for the others around them. They feel empowered in that community. Inquiry-based learning really makes the learning of whatever the subject matter might be authentic to them. If they are exploring a particular topic or are asking those questions, then developing the answers to those questions by exploration and research, they really own that learning.”Ask the Experts: Building A Learning Community
