Q: What is design innovation and why is it an important skill for today’s complex world?
“The 21st century is a world that demands people are able to think outside of the box and not just along disciplinary lines or standard solutions. So design evolution in education is meant to open up people’s minds in different ways rather just filling them with knowledge,” says Mark Mistur, dean of the college of architecture and environmental design at Kent State University. “Design has as much or more to do with the functionality of things, with the operational aspects, as well as with the appearance, touch, feel and sound of things. We need to make sure that we treat design as a way to help people understand how to innovate. That intellectual capital is going to continue to take us through the 21st century.”
