Q: How can parents help their children explore career paths prior to attending college?
A: “Exposure to a lot of different possibilities is good,” says Sue Riley, Project Real coordinator at Beaumont School. “It’s important to know your child and know your child’s strengths and weaknesses to be able to help them discern what it is that would really help them tap into their natural talents and also to grow into something. Challenge them to try new things, to introduce them to new possibilities. There are short-term things — programs or speakers or talks — that they can get involved in to see what it’d be like. If the parents are constantly in that search with them, gently not persistently, that would be helpful too.”
