Q:How does spirituality fit into a Montessori education?
A: “In Montessori, in general, we talk a lot about spirituality in connection to nature and being peaceful. At Cleveland Montessori, we incorporate the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd, which is a religious formation program offered for children starting at the preschool level all the way through eighth grade,” says Tina Schneider, executive director of Cleveland Montessori. “Having that spirituality also brings a centering and a calmness to the individual. In Montessori, you talk about the absorbent mind and give them the opportunity to have an environment that is calm and peaceful and ordered, so that they have the ability to take in everything around them and categorize it in their minds.”
