These Mortal Hosts
Emmy-nominated Cleveland playwright Eric Coble returns with his first full-length play for Cleveland Play House since 2015’s Fairfield. Set in the small town of Dove Creek, Colorado, These Mortal Hosts is a thriller of mystical proportions, a story that involves two apparently random locals who find themselves more linked to their peers as time progresses, and the line between known and not known begins to disappear. This world premiere is a part of the Play House’s New Grounds Theater Festival. $15-$30. May 12, 8 p.m., May 13, 3 p.m. & 7:30 p.m., May 14, 3 p.m., 1407 Euclid Ave., Cleveland, 216-241-6000, clevelandplayhouse.com
Things As They Are
Written by Playwrights Local’s own artistic director David Todd, Things As They Are is a multimedia theater piece exploring the life of poet Wallace Stevens, which uses poems, dance, commedia dell’arte and projections to work around a genre-less, on-stage biopic. The play captures Stevens’ seemingly quixotic life, from his time as an executive for a Hartford, Connecticut, insurance company to winning the Pulitzer Prize in 1955. Catch the all-original score by local indie musicians John Elliot and Ben Chasny. $18, May 12 & 13, 7:30 p.m., May 14, 2:30 p.m., 5209 Detroit Ave., Cleveland, playwrightslocal.org
The Hooley at Kamm’s Corners
Homecoming party meets unofficial St. Patrick’s Day in Cleveland’s West Park neighborhood. For one glorious day, Kamm’s Corners boasts its Irish heritage with Cleveland Fire and Police’s kilt-donning pipes and drums groups, Irish dance academies and music by the Tower City Chorus, Tie Dye Harvest and plenty of other players in green. Oh, and the name hooley is Irish for “lively gathering.” Free. May 13, noon-8 p.m., Lorain Avenue between West 165th Street and Rocky River Drive, Cleveland, 216-252-6559, kammscorners.com
Red Hot Chili Peppers
The Peppers are refreshed and as ballsy as ever on their latest tour. With The Getaway, the band’s first LP since 2014’s I’m With You, RHCP spotlights yet another new lead guitarist, Josh Klinghoffer, while still sporting the spirit of their original funk-backed rock and roll, high-flying stage leaps and shirtless, body-spinning antics. And yes, bassist Flea’s hair is also blue-green. $49-$99, May 13, 8 p.m., 1 Center Court, Cleveland, theqarena.com
