Peep shows, gambling and gangsters — Cleveland's Short Vincent: The Theatrical Grill and its Notorious Neighbors (Cleveland Landmarks Press, $18.95) recalls downtown's once-infamous street in a photo-heavy, 96-page history by Alan F. Dutka. Among our favorite finds in the book were the betting odds for a few national and local political races established by Vincent Avenue's bookies:
Mayoral Race 1973: Ralph Perk favored 8 to 5 to defeat Jim Carney.
Presidential Race 1968: Nixon, $10 to win $7; Humphrey, $4 to win $5
Presidential Race 1964: Even money: Johnson defeats Goldwater plus 6 million votes.
