Whiskey & Firelight shows a new side to local singer-songwriter Nathan Hedges.
The musician crafted the seven-track EP, set to release on May 19, to work just as easily in a solo, acoustic format as it does in a full band setup. Hedges, who performs in Cities & Coasts and New Preservation Society, has shifted to smaller shows in recent years.
“I like doing acoustic shows or duo shows now; it’s easier, it’s fun, it’s a lot less complicated. Having a band is hard,” Hedges says. “Just writing to make it work as an individual song, that you can just play and not have to rely on everyone else to make it sound good, is much more enjoyable for me at this point.”
With Whiskey & Firelight, Hedges also set out to flex his recording and production skills, piecing together the project in his home studio.
He strikes a different sound on the project, leaning into Americana and folk vibes, inspired by his own listening habits and songwriting style. Get a taste of the folky new project with his newest single “Take Me Home” on Friday, March 17.
As for his other bands, Hedges says that Cities & Coasts and New Preservation Society are still going strong; he aims to release new songs with New Preservation soon.
Whether he’s playing solo or with a band, Hedges recognizes the camaraderie that exists in Northeast Ohio’s music scene, which he’s been a part of for decades.
“I think Cleveland’s the best. I really do,” Hedges says. “I’ve lived in Cleveland, Chicago, Portland, New York City, and God’s honest truth, Cleveland is hands down the most supportive from musician to musician.”
Hedges will support Whiskey & Firelight with a few upcoming shows, including an acoustic performance at the House of Blues restaurant on April 7, a live streamed concert with Roots of American Music on May 18 and a Foundation Room full band show on June 24, with more on the way.
