Photographer Danny Lyon embraced the fringe subculture of the Chicago Outlaws Motorcycle Club in the 1960s, blurring the lines of journalism and capturing images immortalized in his striking, now-out-of-print book The Bikeriders. "He was attracted to them as real Americans as opposed to the privileged upper-middle-class kids he went to college with," says Arnold Tunstall, collections manager for the Akron Art Museum. These photos are now all owned by the museum and 30 of the 50 go on display Jan. 26 in Danny Lyon: The Bikeriders. "The photographs have become celebrated," says Tunstall, "which is kind of the opposite of Lyon's initial purpose." 1 South High, Akron, 330-376-9185, akronartmuseum.org
