Nurses sacrifice a lot, pouring immeasurable dedication into patient care. Thirteen years ago, Angelo Merendino, a Cleveland Magazine contributor, experienced their compassion when his first wife, Jennifer, began cancer treatments. His admiration only surged amid the COVID-19 pandemic, which served as a catalyst for the photographer’s latest project. Through May, a total of 30 portraits of local nurses will be displayed at the Cleveland Clinic, MetroHealth and University Hospitals. “Why did you become a nurse?” was the prompt Merendino asked each of them. “No one has answered from a place of ego or selfishness,” Merendino says. “It’s really lifted my spirits to think of how many good people there are in this world.” Merendino minimized the backdrop to capture the human beneath the scrubs, inviting the personal relationship he knows firsthand. “A big part of this to me is trying to honor the people that were there for me during the most challenging time of my life,” he says. angelomerendino.com
