Newgrass city slickers Honeybucket want to spread mountain music. They've rallied more than 12 Ohio bands for the Hingetown Hoedown Oct. 3 with food trucks, art, beer and boot stompin'. Vocalist and guitarist Adam Reifsnyder eases us into roots music with performers ranging from updated folk to olden bluegrass.
Wayfarers
Expect singsongy standards pulled deep from Appalachia with heavy banjo and fiddle. Although the Cincinnati act plays more contemporary originals too. "They are really high energy," says Reifsnyder.
The Gage Brothers
With steady box drum beats beneath a wailing harmonica, twangy acoustic guitar and soulful vocals, the Akron siblings meld classic Americana with new-age blues and folk.
Shivering Timbers
The Akron husband-and-wife-led group discovered by the Black Keys' Dan Auerbach infuses grit by mixing electric guitar and drums with traditional upright bass. "They are still a little bit string-bandy, but they've got a little bit rock influence," says Reifsnyder.
