The 2020 election is still fresh in our minds. For artist Alicia Grullon, it’s something she has been thinking about for years. Selected as an artist-in-residence at Spaces, she started conceiving her project in 2018 with a focus on the upcoming presidential election’s effect on Clevelanders.
But when the pandemic hit, she had to shift her plans. Filmed inside her New York City apartment, Please Don’t Let It Be Too Close uses virtual interviews Grullon conducted with city workers, retired persons, students, professors and others from the Midwest to influence the characters she portrays in her piece.
The resulting theatrical video collage, which runs through March 19, is a study on how locals interpreted, prepared for and talked about the elections and the issues important to them. “2020 has been this contrast of mourning, of deep contemplation contrasted by this real live, really active election season,” Grullon says. “There’s a contrast in the space, and that’s meant to mirror this experience that we’ve had.” spacescle.org
