Everyone feels the heat in the center of Dobama Theatre’s On the Grill. During a family barbecue to celebrate Israeli Independence Day, Rochale and her family aren’t quite at ease. TV news reports keep interrupting their revelry, triggering old memories. Making its American premiere June 21-July 8, the 2015 Israeli Academy Award-winner for Best Play uses the family’s concerns as a stand in for Israel’s own, exploring the side effects of living in a country on the brink of conflict. “The play is really about living in a conflict zone, regardless of your politics,” says Nathan Motta, Dobama’s artistic director, “living in a part of the world where every single young person goes into the army and how that affects people’s relationships, people’s psyches, people’s futures and how people kind of view the world and are able to live day to day.” 2340 Lee Road, Cleveland Heights, 216-932-3396, dobama.org
