Stark black and white prints are Arthur Fellig's trademark. Weegee, as Fellig was known (no one is certain of the nickname's origin), captured the harsh and gritty lifestyle of urban New York in the 1940s.
And those images of the Naked City are on display for one more weekend at the Akron Art Museum.
Fellig drove a 1938 Chevy equipped with a police radio in order to snapshot crimes and emergencies throughout New York City during the '40s. "Crime was my oyster, and I liked it," Fellig wrote in his 1961 biography.
He earned national recognition with his Naked City, a collection of photographic prints published in 1945.
