A little cover-up makes for quirky conversation. Akron native Danny Volk brings his online series Made-Up with Danny Volk back home beginning Sept. 10 at Nightlight Cinema. During the eight live performances, he’ll interview local artists about their work while they use his face as a canvas.
Blank Space
In the name of art, Volk’s face has been coated with liquid slip-casting pottery clay, glued with more than a dozen Q-tips and polished with an industrial sander. “I love it when artists begin to think about this as an opportunity to intervene into the interviewing process,” he says.
Glamor Boy
With a master of fine arts from the University of Chicago, Volk pulls from his background in theater and stage performance. He especially drew upon the experience of sitting in the makeup chair. “There’s someone in your face and they’re talking,” he says. “But they’re not really talking to you, they’re talking at you. I really liked what that did to conversation, and it was really intimate.”
Reality Show
For this season of Made-Up, Volk and Akron artist and curator Roza Maille team up to create a biofictional documentary approach to the YouTube series. “We’re all playing strange versions of ourselves in a sort of heightened theatrical context,” he says.
