It's safe to say the cupcake craze is here to stay. When Main Street Cupcakes served up its first frosting-topped confection in Hudson almost six years ago, we jumped on the sugar-laden bandwagon and have been indulging our sweet tooth ever since. With new shops focusing on the individual tasty treats popping up every year, here's a look at some of our favorite spots and the flavors that have made them a success.
Main Street Cupcakes
OPENED: 2007 FLAVORS: 300+
UNIQUE TWIST: Strawberries & pink champagne ($2.50). "We top it with a strawberry-and-champagne butter cream frosting and roll it in clear sugar crystals,"says co-owner Sarah Forrer. "It is a huge mover for us."
Pure Delite Cupcakes
OPENED: 2010 FLAVORS: 140+
UNIQUE TWIST: Touche Rouche ($2.50). "It's a chocolate cake with a wafer and Nutella center,"says owner Rachel Hough. "We top it with a chocolate hazelnut frosting, a sprinkle of hazelnuts and a chocolate drizzle."
Baby Cakes
OPENED: 2008 FLAVORS: 100+ including gluten-free and vegan options
UNIQUE TWIST: Maple bacon ($2.50). "People are a little wary at first," says owner Dana VanLoan of the cupcake topped with crumbled bacon. "Once they try it, they are hooked."
A Cupcake A Day
OPENED: 2011 FLAVORS: 280+
UNIQUE TWIST: Buffalo chicken ($2.50). "It's a hot sauce cake with a blue cheese frosting and a chicken wing on top,"says owner Shawna Rollheiser. "It isn't usually something you think of when you think of a cupcake."
A Cookie and A Cupcake
OPENED: 2008 FLAVORS: 13+
UNIQUE TWIST: Tomato soup with grilled cheese ($2.50). "We love using our savory palate as inspiration,"says co-owner SynDee Bergen. "This flavor gives you a warm, fuzzy feeling. It's a little nostaglic but fun."
Colossal Cupcakes
OPENED: 2012 FLAVORS: 50+
UNIQUE TWIST: Sunday morning ($3.75). "It's a buttery pancake cupcake with Canadian maple syrup cream cheese frosting and caramelized bacon on top," says owner Kelly Kandah. "It's savory but still sweet and delicious!"
