Lunchtime may have just become our favorite meal of the day thanks to Scott Himmel. The Beachwood native launched his lunch delivery company, LunchOwl, in August as a way for employers to provide healthy meal options to their employees with ease. New weekly menus are filled with wraps, sandwiches, salads and healthy snacks and desserts — all using fresh ingredients such as bread from the Stone Oven Bakery and Cafe or lettuce from Green City Growers.
Q. What's your background in food?
A. I worked with my brother who started Paladar Latin Kitchen and Rum Bar. I focused on the marketing, helped him grow that from one location here in Cleveland to six nationally. My dad has been in the industry his whole career. He ran a restaurant and jazz club called the Boarding House — where Ninja City is currently.
Q. What's your favorite type of LunchOwl offering?
A. One thing on the uber-healthy side, which is part of my persona, is our kale power bowls. It's a bed of kale rubbed with olive oil, lemon juice and salt. We make a house grain mix with brown rice, barley, quinoa and usually a different topping to go over that like Brussels sprouts, cranberries and some nuts. When I eat these salads, I feel incredible.
Q. How do you keep things healthy at LunchOwl?
A. We took a stab at making our own Caesar dressing. The first version we tried used Greek yogurt and the consistency and texture — it firmed up and didn't pour very well. [The new version] is actually made with tofu instead of eggs. You wouldn't guess that. It still has that umami punch that you expect from Caesar dressing. But it's just a little bit more healthy.
