Kathy Owad, owner of Grumpy’s Café (2621 West 14th St.) in Tremont, has inked a deal to take over Bay Provisions (328 Bassett Rd.) in Bay Village. That business closed on May 31 after just a couple years in business, but the property was long home to Martin’s Deli.
Owad and daughter Kristi Mulloy have plans to transform the business from a quiet coffee and ice cream shop into a bustling neighborhood deli.
“This is not going to be another Grumpy’s,” says Owad. “We’ll still do the coffee and the ice cream but we’re going to have a lot of food to go, soups, some groceries, beer and wine… Just bring it back to a neighborhood place where people feel comfortable coming for a cup of coffee, some ice cream or stay for dinner.”
The new owners have a lot of work ahead of them, they say, and are looking forward to a late summer or early fall opening. They plan to open up the interior and better utilize all of the space.
As residents of Bay Village, Owad and Reilly say that they have been talking to family, friends and neighbors in the community to see what products and services they want in a neighborhood deli.
“Being from here, and we both live here now, we want it to feel inviting and to offer what the people want,” adds Owad.
They will be working with chef Brittany Reilly on the food offerings.
Owad says that fans of Grumpy’s, which is 18 years old now, should expect no changes in Tremont.
