HiHo Brewing Co. is a family affair — and not just because the little ones are welcome. After witnessing Denver’s craft beer boom, Ali and Jon Hovan were inspired to bring the Colorado brewing culture home to Cuyahoga Falls. But they needed help. Inexperienced and strapped for cash, Jon served as a learn-on-the-fly general contractor, hiring his mom as a painter and his dad as a laborer.
Ali’s parents repurposed their fence and deck into the taproom’s bar and tables. Since opening in January, 2017, the result is a clean, industrial-style space that’s as inclusive as its creation. “We’re a space for the community — bring your kids, come with your grandma,” Ali says. “That was the culture in Denver, and we wanted to bring that back here.”
Brewing has been easy since scaling up to a seven-barrel brewing system. Jon, who started homebrewing at 17 years old, has since honed recipes such as the Tangerine in the Clouds ($7 for a pint), a hazy IPA with a residual sweetness.
Our Pick: Named after Ali and styled to her taste, the Bossy Lady ($7 for 16 ounces) is a great gateway IPA due to its full West Coast spruce flavor, sweet malt and mild hops. 1707 Front St., Cuyahoga Falls, 234-334-7564, hihobrewingco.com
