There’s plenty of Cleveland culinary news to share with you this fall.
• Michael Feigenbaum, who runs Lucy’s Sweet Surrender — a wonderful Hungarian bakery on Buckeye Road in Cleveland — is getting ready to open a second place in Collinwood, an up-and-coming art and entertainment enclave. Called Café Marika, it’s in a building at the corner of East156th and Waterloo. His cakes and pastries are on the menu along with made-from-scratch lunch and dinner entrees and a great selection of wines, beers and coffee drinks.
• Congratulations to Norm and Carol Heinle’s Sausage Shoppe on Memphis Avenue near the zoo for getting ink in Gourmet (August 2006), in a story by Michael Ruhlman.
• Feast contributor Marianne Frantz passed the Advanced level exam given by The Court of Master Sommeliers this summer on her first try! The failure rate is typically around 80 percent for this grueling three-day test of wine knowledge. 30 people took the exam with Frantz and only six others were successful. Frantz is now a candidate for the Master Sommelier exam, which she hopes to take next year. There are just 124 Masters in the world and 79 in the U.S., and only 13 of those are women.
• Another beverage-related round of applause goes to Great Lakes Brewing Co. Their Holy Moses White Ale took 7th place in the annual “25 Best Beers in America” taste test sponsored by Men’s Journal (October 2006). Burning River Pale Ale nabbed 14th place, making Great Lakes the only brewer with two winning beers.
• Ten Clevelanders are heading to Turin, Italy at the end of October for the Terre Madre conference hosted by Slow Food International. They’ll join 6,000 farmers, food producers and chefs from around the world to discuss the slow food movement, fair trade and more. This year’s Northern Ohio delegation includes:
