Hungarian Lecso, $14-$17.95 | Balaton
Owners George and Krisztina Ponti are celebrating the 50th anniversary of their restaurant this month by keeping authenticity alive with their Hungarian Lecso — a stew made with Hungarian wax peppers, banana peppers, onions and smoked sausage served over rice. "It was popular in the smaller villages where everything was handy in the fields," says Krisztina. "It's very inexpensive and mostly made out of vegetables." George travels to Amish Country every July through September to buy the peppers in bulk, so the dish can be made throughout the winter.
