David Huffman, owner of Cleveland baked good company Bitchy Vegan Homo, started selling his ear-catching treats in 2018 with the vegan ethos “Nothing milked. Nothing murdered.” The name came from a playful jab from a friend that Huffman decided to wear with pride.
“Those who know me would probably say that isn't the ‘only’ reason I am bitchy,” Huffman jokes in his website bio. “Still, I don't shy away from being me and luckily I can cook really well. You'd be shocked at how much you can get away with as long as you keep people well-fed.”
The baker’s LGBTQ-inspired sweets range anywhere from simple chocolate chip cookie to seasonal Valentine’s Day Lamington Cakes — moist vanilla sponge covered in raspberry sauce and coconut shavings.
Of course, BVH has a variety of unique, yet classic treats coming for the holidays. His Tannenbaum Cupcakes ($7.50) contain a pistachio cake base with lemongrass-lavender matcha frosting. Decorating the cupcakes with green trees and various sprinkles helps incorporate the holiday feel into the treat. “It’s not traditional Christmassy flavors, but the combination is delicious,” Huffman says. “That’s probably my favorite of the seasonal treats that I make.”
Customers can also expect the return of his highly popular Gingerbread Sluts ($3.50). The bawdy confections are a classic gingerbread cookie recipe that is “sex positive, non-gender specific “and proudly decorated with the phrase across the front.
The flavor didn’t stop there, on the menu this holiday is Hot Chocolate Cupcakes ($7.50), made with cayenne-spiced chocolate and cinnamon frosting. “I like a spicy, delicious, gingery flavor,” he says.
Rounding out his treats are the signature “Best Damn Brownie” ($5), sold year-round. “I will have those at every event until I’m dead I’m sure,” Huffman says. The secret to making it the “best” brownie isn’t in the recipe, however. Traditional ingredients such as oil, cocoa, chocolate and flour (no eggs!) go into the treat, but it’s all about how it’s baked, Huffman explains. Getting the perfect combination of fudgy and cake-y is what made this brownie a fan-favorite all year.
