Five years ago, Ryan Holmes was serving his Bullet IPA out of a barrel tank at grad parties and weddings. He’s since outgrown his backyard brew operation by expanding to a 10-barrel brewing system and opening a taproom in a Kent warehouse last year.
Behind a makeshift bar with eight beers on tap, you’ll find Holmes’ mom slinging the smooth 20 Eyes Gnarly Hop Creature ($7.50 for 16 ounces), an American pale ale named after a Misfits song, and the heady Bad Leroy Brown Ale ($7.50 for 16 ounces). Holmes keeps the party going with pinball, Skee Ball and a rotating lineup of food trucks. It might seem like a mosh pit of activity, but at MadCap, everyone’s welcome to jump in.
Our Pick: The Bullet IPA ($7 for 16 ounces), a drinkable IPA with a strong aroma and front-end bite from late-addition hops, has a smooth, malty finish with a slight bitterness that doesn’t hang on your tongue. 1422 Mogadore Road, Kent, 330-548-9654, madcapbrewco.com
