Fans of the choose-your-own-adventure method rejoice. Akron’s Sugar and Slice takes the tried, true and yummy build-your-own approach and applies it to pizza and doughnuts. “If anybody has a flavor combination that we haven’t come up with, they can do whatever their heart desires,” says owner Nick Pamboukis.
Pizza: Start your journey with a regular pizza ($8.55-$10.95), calzone ($7.95-$10.55) or stuffed muffins ($9.84 for a dozen), sauces such as Greek tzatziki and finish it all off with toppings (20-95 cents each) such as buffalo mozzarella, seasoned taco beef or crispy bits of fried chicken. If it’s all too much: The spot also has 13 featured pies such as the Hawaiian Vacation ($12.55-$14.95), Pamboukis’ take on a classic with bits of pineapple, banana peppers, bacon and a surprise addition. “We’re putting pulled pork on there, which sets it apart from pretty much anyone else’s,” he says.
Doughnuts: If you want to prove that a raspberry jam glaze doughnut with vanilla cheesecake frosting and walnuts is amazing, here’s you chance. Build the treat of your dreams with doughnuts (49 cents for one, $2.94 for a half dozen, $5.86 for a dozen) topped with 10 glazes or sauces (20 cents each) such as peanut butter or hot fudge, and 18 toppings (20 cents each) such as Fruity Pebbles or shredded coconut. If it’s all too much: Pamboukis offers 16 featured doughnuts such as the maple, bacon and chocolate option (95 cents for one, $4.95 for a half dozen, $9.55 for a dozen). “You’ve got that salty and sugar flavor,” Pamboukis says. “People love that.”
